教师 researchers in 生物化学 and 分子生物学 seek to understand the molecular and cellular bases of human health and disease. We apply a broad range of tools ranging from 结构生物学 and biophysics to cell biology and genomes. BioChem 教师 with expertise in X-ray crystallography, 电子显微镜, and spectroscopy investigate protein structure, 折叠, and interactions to help define disease mechanisms and develop new therapies.

Other faculty members employ modern genetics and genomic technologies to generate a broader understanding of cellular pathways and systems biology. We use several different model systems, 包括老鼠, flies and single-celled organisms to model disease processes and development.

教师 research in 生物化学 and 分子生物学 covers topics ranging from 结构生物学, bioenergetics and biophysics to cell signaling and cell biology. The department has interests in membrane proteins and transport, nucleic acid binding proteins, 氧化应激, often using model systems in investigations.

These studies impact many human diseases, ranging from cancer to neurodegenerative disorders. Recent papers by faculty members and students have appeared in Science, 自然细胞生物学, Journal of Biological Chemistry, 细胞生物学杂志, 分子生物学 of the Cell, and Journal of 分子生物学. The department continues to have a strong record of extramural research funding, primarily from NIH (National Institutes of Health) (National Institutes of Health).
